Best Quadratic Approximations of Cubic Boolean Functions

چکیده
The problem of computing best low order approximations of Boolean functions is treated in this paper. We focus on the case of best quadratic approximations of a wide class of cubic functions of arbitrary number of variables, and provide formulas for their efficient calculation. Our methodology is developed upon Shannon’s expansion formula and properties of best affine approximations of quadratic functions, for which we prove formulas for their direct computation, without use of the WalshHadamard transform. The notion of nonquadricity is introduced, as the minimum distance from all quadratic functions, and cubic functions that achieve the maximum possible nonquadricity are determined, leading to a lower bound for the covering radius of second order Reed-Muller code R(2, n) in R(3, n).

Maiorana-McFarland Functions with High Second-Order Nonlinearity
The second–order nonlinearity, and the best quadratic approximations, of Boolean functions are studied in this paper. We prove that cubic functions within the Maiorana–McFarland class achieve very high second order nonlinearity, which is close to an upper bound that was recently proved by Carlet et al., and much higher than the second order nonlinearity obtained by other known constructions. Th...
متن کاملApproximating Pseudo-Boolean Functions on Non-Uniform Domains
In Machine Learning (ML) and Evolutionary Computation (EC), it is often beneficial to approximate a complicated function by a simpler one, such as a linear or quadratic function, for computational efficiency or feasibility reasons (cf. [Jin, 2005]). A complicated function (the target function in ML or the fitness function in EC) may require an exponential amount of computation to learn/evaluate...
متن کاملAccountability of Modern Adiabatic Connection-Based Double-Hybrids Constructed from Cubic and Quadratic Integrand Functions for Dipole Polarizabilities of Water Nanoclusters
In this work, we dissect the performance of two modern Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)-based double-hybrid (DH) density functionals to predict the isotropic and anisotropic polarizabilities of water nanoclusters (H2O)n [n = 2-6]. The considered models include the cubic integrand (CI) and quadratic integrand (QI) functions as well as the spin-opposite-scaled...
متن کاملSignal Processing Techniques in Cryptography
Security of cryptographic symmetric primitives is studied in this thesis. Pseudorandomness characteristics of cryptographic sequences are analyzed, resulting in new methods for constructing sequences with high linear complexity. Connections between nonlinear complexity and other cryptographic criteria are also established, whereas a new recursive algorithm for efficiently computing the minimal ...
متن کاملA note on APN permutations in even dimension
APN permutations in even dimension are vectorial Boolean functions that play a special role in the design of block ciphers. We study their properties, providing some general results and some applications to the low-dimension cases. In particular, we prove that none of their components can be quadratic. For an APN vectorial Boolean function (in even dimension) with all cubic components we prove ...
